Well, I remember doing this back in Intro to Engineering class I had in my junior year of highschool. I was the youngest in the class, being the only junior and all. I remember fondly laying real close (spooning) to the only women in the class on the cardboard, for experimental reasons ^_^ to see how much room we would need. We designed the template for a hexagonal and pentagon shape cardboard, which is what we used for our geodesic dome. The top of the dome was a pentagon, then then next level was all hex, and so on.. alternating back and forth until the bottom.
I enjoyed that class, one the teacher was my high school swim coach (Mr. Treubig), so that was kinda fun getting picked on by him. I remember do the egg crash test dummies, where we try to design a better bumper for these wooden cars, so that the egg wouldn't crack. We even went on good field trips, several times during the year, to places like Schwizzer Aircraft's engineering center. We also did the old marble sorter thing, we had to sort among three bins, clear, translucent, and black. We also had to design on that stupid CAD machine and print out our design.
